Per Fox:
At least five ambulances responded to the Scottrade Center in Downtown St. Louis just after 9:30 Thursday night. Fire officials confirm some kind of accident on an escalator in the arena with as many as seven people injured. The accident happened following the Blues’ game with the Atlanta Thrashers.
A witness on the scene who wouldn’t give his name says fans were on the escalator not long after the game had ended. At that point, he said the escalator started moving extremely fast, as though a gear had broken loose. He says between eighty and one-hundred people were rushing toward the bottom of the escalator, literally piling on to one another as the machine went out of control.
Another witness, Judy Beck, says the escalator finally stopped when a man’s foot got stuck and jammed the machine. She says medics spent more than twenty minutes trying to extricate the man from the escalator.
Fire officials didn’t have information on the severity of the injuries.
