Rumor of the Day: 6/14/09

d

To Ottawa: Milan Hejduk and 1st round draft pick (3rd overall – Matt Duchene – C – Brampton OHL)

To Colorado: Dany Heatley and 1st round draft pick (9th overall – Dmitry Kulikov – D – Drummondville QMJHL )

I am going to start doing random rumors each day just for fun during the offseason. 90% of them will probably have zero chance of happening ever, but its cool to think about players on different teams. For draft picks, i am looking at mock drafts as to who will most likely be drafted then.

For Ottawa: They are forced to move Heatley and Colorado is one of the few teams that can offer a package suitable to the starpower that Heatley has. They bring in Hejduk which is a decent replacement for Heatley and also pick up the 3rd overall pick in return for their 9th overall. I would rather have Heatley if I were the Sens, but since they are forced into this, Colorado seems to have the best possible potential offer.

For Colorado: Heatley is a star player that you can build a team around. Heatley will only be 28 this year and is still in his prime. The 3rd overall pick is not as much of a sure thing as the 1st and 2nd (Tavares and Hedman) so moving down to the 9th pick is not as bad as it may seem. The only huge question mark is taking on Heatley’s contract which is basically $8 Million per year until 2012/2013. Heatley is a guarenteed 40 goal scorer and would look great on Sakic or Stastny’s wing.

Heatley ($8.00 M) > Hejduk ($4.00 M) by a small margin

3rd overall > 9th overall by a small margin as well

Winner of the trade: Even trade, good for both teams

Added Note: Hejduk is beyond loved as a fan favorite in Colorado, so expect Colorado fans to be very unhappy if this were ever to happen.
