Good move for Pittsburgh. If Chris Kunitz ends up being the winger for Sidney Crosby that Pittsburgh hoped Miroslav Satan and/or Ruslan Fedotenko would be, then watch out Eastern Conference!
If the Pittsburgh powerplay and overall offense gets sparked by this, then Pittsburgh could be right where they were at this time last year. I expect another small deal for a defenseman for Pittsburgh.
As for Anaheim, i think they are about to sell their veterans for a number of picks and/or young proven players since they basically have no chance with Detroit and San Jose in the West this season. I assume they expect Chris Pronger and Scott Neidermayer to walk, which is why they went for Ryan Whitney.
Pronger is already signed for next year. I doubt he walks.
If only this would be the end of all the “Crosby needs a winger” talk.
Pronger might be traded now, but this may be a move just to ensure they have another good defenseman signed next year. Only Pronger (and now Whitney) are signed through next year; Montador, Niedermayer, Beauchemin, Hedican, and Huskins are all UFA’s.
