According to a tweet from ESPNNewYork.com’s Katie Strang, the Rangers waived Avery on Friday. TSN’s Bob McKenzie confirmed the move on his Twitter account.

Avery hasn’t played since Dec. 10, a total of nine straight games, and has played in only 15 games since he was recalled from Connecticut of the American Hockey League in early November. He has three goals, a plus-2 rating and 21 penalty minutes.

Avery was among the Rangers final cuts prior to their season-opener in Stockholm against Los Angeles. He cleared waivers and was assigned to Connecticut, but he was later recalled by the Rangers on Nov. 1. Avery had to clear re-entry waivers in order to return to the club.

The New York Post confirmed a report Sunday afternoon that the New York Rangers will place the 31-year-old forward on re-entry waivers Monday.

Should Avery be claimed, the team would have him for a portion of his salary and cap hit. The Rangers are splitting his salary after they claimed him off re-entry waivers from the Dallas Stars on March 3, 2009.

According to the New York Post, if Avery goes unclaimed, he would be eligible to play for the Blueshirts on Thursday, when they’ll host the Anaheim Ducks at Madison Square Garden.

Avery was sent to AHL Connecticut after failing to make the Rangers’ roster out of training camp. He had 3 goals in 76 games for New York last season. Avery has a goal and seven penalty minutes in two AHL contests this season.

The Rangers are off to a 3-3-3 start and have scored only 20 goals in those nine games.

Sean Avery’s days with the New York Rangersappear over.

The noted agitator cleared waivers Wednesday and was assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. The move clears his $1.93 million from the team’s salary cap.

Avery was in the final season of the contract he originally signed with the Dallas Stars. He didn’t play in New York’s final two exhibition games in Europe, and it became inevitable he would be cut.

Rangers coach John Tortorella said Tuesday the club had better players than Avery. It is not known if the forward will report to the AHL team or try to join a club in Europe.

The Rangers were busy Wednesday solidifying the roster that will open the regular season Friday in Sweden against the Los Angeles Kings.

All-Star defenseman Marc Staal was placed on the injured list because of lingering effects from a concussion on Feb. 22 when he was hit by brother Eric, a star forward with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Staal, who stayed home from Europe to skate and practice, had already been ruled out of the opening two games in Sweden. He would be eligible to play Oct. 15 against the New York Islanders, but there is no timetable for his return.

Filling his place on the blue line will be 20-year-old rookie Tim Erixon, who was recalled from Connecticut after being sent down on Saturday. Erixon, acquired from Calgary in June, had two assists and a plus-3 rating in five preseason games with the Rangers.

Brendan Bell and Stu Bickel also cleared waivers and remained on the Rangers’ 23-man roster, giving New York eight defensemen.

It’s likely the Rangers will assign Avery to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League. The team also could give him the option of exploring playing possibilities in Europe.

The Rangers no longer have Avery’s $1,937,500 salary attached to their salary cap, but they still have to pay him.

New York still has to make a roster move to make room for Tim Erixon, who is going to be recalled Wednesday and will be with the club here for practice Thursday.

One option could be putting defenseman Marc Staal (post-concussion symptoms) on injured reserve, but coach John Tortorella has been adamant that that is not the move they want to make.

The Rangers also could send assign Bickel or Bell to Connecticut and leave themselves with seven defensemen in Stockholm for the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere.

Final rosters have to be set by 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Per NHL.com:

The New York Rangers placed left wing Sean Avery on waivers at noon ET Tuesday, a team representative confirmed to NHL.com.

Avery, who is in the final season of a four-year contract, will remain on waivers for 24 hours, during which time another team can claim him. If he is not claimed, the Rangers can assign Avery to their American Hockey League team, the Connecticut Whale, and his $1,937,500 salary will come off their cap.

Avery’s agent, Pat Morris, told ESPN.com on Tuesday that playing in Europe this season is an option if the 31-year-old left wing clears waivers.

Rangers coach John Tortorella wants to have only one extra forward on the roster, and has been saying since Saturday that the battle for that spot was between Avery and Erik Christensen.

The roster crunch up front comes because the club is carrying eight defensemen — including Marc Staal, who remains in New York due to headaches that are a result of a concussion he suffered in February.

Tortorella said Monday that Staal likely wouldn’t go in injured reserve right away, but with Avery’s cap hit cleared the Rangers could go after another defenseman, either through a trade or free agency.

Signs were pointing to Christensen having the edge in his battle for the final forward spot. He played in all four preseason games in Europe while Avery saw time in just one. Avery did not play after Tortorella announced that he was in competition with Christensen for the final forward spot.

Tortorella also made a comment Monday about how Christensen’s ability in the shootout helped the Rangers make the playoffs last season.

The Rangers claimed Avery from Dallas off re-entry waivers on March 3, 2009. He was signed by the Stars to a four-year, $15.5 million contract on July 2, 2008, but was suspended and ordered to enroll in anger management classes by the NHL after making lewd public remarks about an ex-girlfriend.

The Rangers also waived defensemen Stu Bickel and Brendan Bell.
