Per NHL.com:

With two Stanley Cup rings and 856 points on his resume, Bill Guerin on Monday said he’s had enough and through the Pittsburgh Penguins announced he is retiring as an NHL player.

The Penguins will honor Guerin in a pre-game ceremony prior to Monday’s game against New Jersey at Consol Energy Center. Guerin was drafted by New Jersey in 1989, started his NHL career there in 1992 and played parts of seven seasons with the Devils until he was traded to Edmonton on Jan. 4, 1998.

Guerin, who lives on Long Island, visited with the Penguins when they were in New York last week. Even though he spent only the last season-plus of his playing career in Pittsburgh, he said he felt a great connection to the team, its fans and the city that it was only appropriate for him to retire as a Penguin.

“It was amazing,” Guerin said in a statement released by the team. “From ownership and (General Manager) Ray Shero to the coaching staff and trainers, from my teammates to the arena workers to the people in the stands, they all treated us in such a first-class manner. It was an extremely positive experience. We all agree that retiring as a Pittsburgh Penguin is the perfect thing to do.”

Guerin played 95 games as a Penguin after he was traded there by the Islanders on March 4, 2009. He had 26 goals and 31 assists and was a key contributor to the Penguins’ run to the Stanley Cup in 2009. He had 7 goals and 8 assists during the ’09 playoffs while playing mostly on Sidney Crosby‘s right wing.

“In the last couple of years it’s been really tough and Pittsburgh was a place that my family and I felt really connected to,” Guerin said during an appearance on NHL Live! “It’s been fantastic.”

The Penguins did not offer Guerin a contract this summer. He signed a tryout deal with the Philadelphia Flyers, but was released before opening night.

“I knew what I was going to do and in my heart I knew it had to be done,” Guerin said. “When I was done with Philly in camp, I said it’s too much. I can’t live away from my family again, I can’t move them again and I’ve played long enough. I’d play another 50 years if I could, but what our family has been through in regards to moving and changing teams, you know, enough is enough, so I will just end it now, look back on a successful career and put a smile on my face.”Now 40, Guerin started his career with the Devils in 1992 as a 22-year-old coming out of Boston College. He was the fifth pick of the ’89 Entry Draft.

Guerin played for eight teams over his 18 NHL seasons with the Devils, Oilers, Bruins, Stars, Blues, Sharks, Islanders and Penguins, totaling 429 goals, 427 assists and 1,660 penalty minutes in 1,263 regular-season games. He also had 39 goals and 35 assists in 140 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He also won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995.

Guerin said it was important for him to pick now to retire because of Monday’s game against the Devils.

“The reason I planned on it today is because New Jersey is here,” said Guerin. “New Jersey is the team that took a chance on me. Lou (Lamoriello, GM) gave me my start, groomed me as a young player and taught me a lot of things. That’s why this game is symbolic for me.”

After being traded from Edmonton to Boston on Nov. 15, 2000, Guerin went on to post 63 points in 64 games with the Bruins. If you add in the 22 points he had in 21 games with the Oilers, he had a career-best 85 points in 85 games during the 2000-01 season. He followed that with a career-high 41 goals in 78 games with the Bruins in 2001-02.

He had five 30-goal seasons and 13 20-goal seasons. He’s the only player in NHL history to score 20 goals with seven teams.

He was known as one of the best U.S.-born players of his generation. Guerin was part of the U.S. World Cup championship team in 1996 and won a silver medal at the 2002 Olympics. He also played for Team USA at the 2004 World Cup and the 1998 and 2006 Olympics.

Guerin was a four-time All-Star and was the MVP at the 2001 All-Star Game in Denver.

Most recently, has started to try broadcasting, working as an analyst on Versus’ “NHL Overtime” show.
