Washington forward Donald Brashear has been suspended for six games by the National Hockey League and will miss Tuesday’s Game 7 of the Capitals’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinal round series against the New York Rangers (7 p.m. ET, VERSUS, TSN, RDS) for his action both prior to, and during, Sunday’s Game 6.
Brashear was suspended one game for initiating contact with Rangers forward Colton Orr during the pre-game warm-up. Brashear was suspended for five additional games for a blind-side hit on New York forward Blair Betts at 9:54 of the first period.
“Brashear delivered a shoulder hit to an unsuspecting player,” NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell said. “It is also my opinion that the hit was delivered late and targeted the head of his opponent, causing significant injury.”
Brashear’s suspension will be served beginning tomorrow night when the Capitals meet the Rangers in Game 7 of the series. The suspension will extend through the Capitals’ next five 2009 playoff games, the 2009-10 regular season, or both, as circumstances warrant.
Any Capitals fan that was stupid enough to say any of these:
“that is comparable to Avery’s hits.” or
“the hit wasn’t that late, it was a good no call.” or
“Betts should have had his head up.” or
“Good, we don’t need Brashear anyways.”
THEN YOU ARE A COMPLETE MORON.
That hit was one of the worst hits I have ever seen and Donald Brashear is lucky that that Blair Betts is not seriously injured or Brashear would be done in this league.

That cheap shot by Brashear shows a total lack of respect for the game …it is sickening…he got off easy with only 5 games…how can he sleep at night…

3. Brashear went into crazy mode after Callahan hit him and turned his head a few times looking for the first Ranger he could find just to hurt him. It doesn’t matter who you are a fan of, that is not good for the game.
I was pissed at all the Capitals fans defending the hit. That had potential to be a Steve Moore incident all over again and moron Capitals fans were saying stupid things like “he should have his head up.”
Obviously the NHL agrees with me since they gave him 5 games for this “somewhat dirty hit”
Nice find on the videos Joe, but that is still only 3 times in the past 30+ years and the only relatively recent one was the Tie Domi one and that wasn’t really a shocker since it was Domi.
I just think there was a ton more than happened than we know to set a coach off like that.
Its one thing to set off a Domi or Avery type guy, but a respected coach? That doesn’t happen often.

I’m not saying it wasn’t Torts’ fault, but I don’t believe it was just heckling that caused him to snap. There has to be more.
