Ya, that was a great game, definitely, but, BUT, there is still NOTHING, even today, NOTHING that compares to the Summit Of 1972 series, of Team Canada vs the CCCP Soviet Union Red Army. And IF you are a Canadian Hockey fan, ya will remember it was Paul Henderson who scored the winning goal for Team Canada in that series in the game 8 final.

I agree. For those of us old enough to remember nothing surpasses the 1972 Summit Series. It was the first international series featuring best vs best and the way Canada won it is unbelievable. Game 8 was the best game ever played. In ’74 or ’75 the Red Army Team toured the NHL and the first game was in Montreal Forum. A 3-3 tie that was truly a great game. Giving USA their propers, they Miracle on Ice team of the Olympics was a great game … but considering very few of the USA squad had any hockey future really illustrates what a fluke it was. Canada’s win in the 2010 Olympics has to rank up there as well. Sorry again USA, but really you were lucky to be there.

Seriously? This is a joke right? Good game, but not even close to a classic. Best ever, laughable. 72 Summit Series was nail biting and intense, but not well played nor great. New Years Eve ’75 was a lopsided mess saved ONLY by one of the greatest GOAL TENDING performances ever.

Best game ever, game 2 1987 Canada Cup final. I am old enough to remember all these games and nothing is close to the 87 final and game 2 was the best. Canada/US? There isn’t a Canada/US game at any level that cracks the top 10 hockey games. Sorry USA when it comes to hockey you don’t even rate an honorable mention.

agree with those who think the 75 game between montreal and red army has long been over-rated. Truth is, montreal dominated long stretches of that game – and, I should add, there were long stretches of fairly mediocre hockey with both teams unable to complete a pass – and tretiak and dryden were the reasons that game ended in a 3-3 tie; flip the goalies and montreal quite possibly wins 7-1 or even 8-1. Just to give you an idea of how over-rated dryden is, montreal beat the red army squad 4-2 in December of 1979 – right around when the light was finally going out on their dynasty; they won with richard sevigny in goal, by the way, so we’re not talking jacques plante here. As far as the greatest game ever, I believe the 1987 canada cup finale – game 2 – takes the cake. I think the 2 teams generated about 111 shots on goal, generated 83 scoring chances (according to Ed Willes, Canada had 45 of them) and played at a pace that was so far beyond the typical NHL game of that period that it was laughable (heck, a modern-day hockey fan who can’t recall anything before 2000 can still watch that game and be royally entertained because they are basically playing at close to a 2011 pace throughout). Tremendous game featuring 2 of the 4 best teams ever in international hockey.
