jagr hockey wide Bad News Bears: Jaromir Jagr re signs with Avangard Omsk...

Per The Cult of Hockey:

Just before departing for Prague to join Team Czech for the world championships, Jaromir Jagr signed a one-year contract with Avangard Omsk. This extends his stay in the Siberian city to three consecutive seasons. Jagr said Monday he didn’t consider any other teams and negotiated with Omsk only.

“If it didn’t work out there, I’d have to start looking at other options. But I just didn’t want to be engaged in multiple negotiations that would force me eventually to decide which direction to take.”

So far as the NHL is concerned, Jagr said he’s going to be 39 next season and he can’t predict now whether there is even going to be an NHL team looking for his services.

Asked whether he would have liked to have some kind of an official farewell from the NHL after all those years, Jagr said a farewell would have been nice, perhaps, but the main thing for him is that he is where he is, and he doesn’t plan to dwell on it.

While he wouldn’t discuss details, Jagr said he did agree to a lesser amount than he had earned last season. Still, he added, the final amount, including bonuses, is about the same as last year. Then, Jagr earned $7 million in basic salary. The bonuses for the upcoming season will kick in only in case Omsk makes the quarterfinals of the Gagarin Cup.

The Continental Hockey League’s (KHL) top trophy is named after Yuri Alexeievich Gagarin, the first man in space. Gagarin circled the Earth once in the groundbreaking, 108-minute long flight April 12, 1961.
