Detroit Red Wings forward Mike Modano is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a severed tendon in his right wrist.
Modano, 40, suffered the injury in the second period of Friday night’s 2-1 victory against the Blue Jackets in Columbus, when he was caught by a skate blade.
Modano returned to Detroit with the team after the game and had surgery Saturday morning at Detroit Medical Center. A news release from the Red Wings said the injury included slight damage to a nerve. No timetable regarding his return was given.Modano signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings in August, after spending 20 years with the Dallas Stars franchise. He had 14 goals and 30 points in 59 games last season, his lowest-scoring season since 1995, and Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk decided not to re-sign him.Modano has two goals and six assists in 20 games this season.
He has 559 career goals and 1,367 points — both the most-ever by a U.S.-born player.
