Things have gone from bad to worse for Penguins center Jordan Staal.
On the cusp of finally returning from complications of off-season foot surgery, Staal has now been ruled out for at least another month after suffering a fractured hand in Monday’s practice.
According to GM Ray Shero, Staal will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a fractured right hand and could miss up to six weeks.
Staal has yet to play this season because of a foot infection stemming from off-season surgery. Staal suffered a severed tendon in his foot during the 2010 playoffs against Montreal, but returned later that series. He had a procedure done on the injury after the Penguins were eliminated by Montreal.
After dealing with several setbacks, Staal began practicing with the team recently and was nearing a comeback. In fact, in Monday’s practice, Staal was playing second-line center during line drills, according to the team website.
However, Staal left practice 45 minutes early after he was struck on the right hand by a puck.
Dr. Glenn Buterbaugh will perform the surgery.
In other injury news, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said both forward Evgeni Malkin, the usual No. 2 center, and defenseman Kris Letang are both considered day-to-day.
