Hockey Canada announced on Saturday that Canada’s National Junior Team will wear green jerseys during the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship, in honour of Saskatchewan’s love affair with the CFL’s Roughriders and as a salute to the province. Also, the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship will mark the first time the tournament has returned to Canadian cities (Regina and Saskatoon) for a second time.
The green jerseys were unveiled during the Saskatchewan-B.C. Lions game in Regina on Saturday.
“Green is the colour … hockey is the game,” says Scott Smith, chief operating officer of Hockey Canada. “It’s exciting to release a special version of the Hockey Canada jersey. We believe fans in Saskatchewan, and throughout Canada, will rally around the green jerseys prior to and during the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.”
Canada’s National Junior Team will wear the jerseys twice – once in a pre-competition game and once during the championship. Canada is attempting to win its sixth-straight IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal.
“We’re thrilled with the tribute that Hockey Canada is giving to our province and our sports fans,” says Jack Brodsky, president of the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship host organizing committee. “We expect these jerseys to be a hit and can’t wait to see fans wearing them in the seats during the championship.”
This is a slap in the face to Canadian hockey fans. This is supposed to be Canadas team, not Saskatchewans team. I don’t see how honoring a provincal football team is at all relevent, it is nothing more than a cash grab by hockey Canada and a disgraceful one at that.
I really have no objection but I do agree that this is a cash grab. If Hockey Canada produce a ‘provincial’ coloured jersey each time this tournament was in Canada it would probably be more acceptable. I don’t care what colour our young men and women are wearing I will support them.
I have no objection either. If anything it will excite the crazy Saskatchewan fans. When the games count, we’ll be back to wearing the red and white!

I don’t get it! Our Juniors are representing our country, which in turn our colours of the flag. I wonder how our guys feel about it? After all, dreaming of one day having the opportunity to play for our country wearing our red and white flag colours. However, I am not angry about the decision as they at least had enough sense to only wear the green jersey for one pregame and one game during the Championship. I suppose it shows respect to Saskatchewan and a huge thank you.
