Congratulations to Martin Brodeur

Martin Brodeur ties Patrick Roy for with 551 Wins

I guarantee Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy talked and figured out the real number of wins needed to break Patrick Roy’s record.

By that I mean: How many wins did Martin Brodeur get from the shootout which Patrick Roy never had the pleasure of playing in?

UPDATE: I went through and figured out that Brodeur has 27 shootout wins since the shootouts started. I am not trying to take anything away from the accomplishment, but it would be nice of the NHL or someone to note this. Or when he does get the 27 additional wins, someone relevant says that “There is no doubt now” or something along those lines.

I know the rules have changed and that is the way it is. Brodeur would have beaten the record if it were 578 (551+27) and could possibly have beaten the record by now if it were not for the 04-05 lockout season.

Lets hypothetically pretend the NHL changes to 3 on 3 hockey and games start ending with scores around 15-14. Lets say Alexander Ovechkin finishes a season with 150 goals under these new rules and ends his career with 1000+ goals? Would anyone be arguing for Gretzkys records in this case?

I think this situation is very similar, just not as extreme and should just be at least noted.

At least no one in this sport is saying that the record should be tainted because of steroids or anything that the other sports have to deal with. That is why I LOVE HOCKEY!

Brodeur has not been aided much by shootouts. Keep in mind, he also played most of his career without them. Even with shootouts now implemented, Brodeur will still finish WELL ahead of Roy’s “real” win mark.
