Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur left Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Kings with an apparent right shoulder injury.

The NHL’s all-time leader in wins suffered the injury during a scramble that saw him dive to protect an open net. Brodeur’s diving effort with about 12 minutes left in the first period was brilliant, but it clearly left him shaken.

Brodeur remained in the game and stopped 10 of 11 shots, but backup Johan Hedberg took over to start the second period. Brodeur was on the bench, however, smiling and laughing with teammates while Hedberg was in net.

Per NHL.com:

New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, who has missed the last three games with a non-operable right knee sprain, was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb. 6, by General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

Although Brodeur is eligible to return to the lineup Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes at Prudential Center, that scenario is highly unlikely as Brodeur was just placed on IR on Tuesday.

Brodeur was injured on Feb. 6 in Montreal when his right leg got caught under him while making a save on Tomas Plekanec. He missed six games in 2005-06 when he sprained the same MCL in the same knee.

At the time of the injury, Brodeur gave no timetable for his return.

“I really don’t know,” Brodeur told reporters on Sunday. “It could be maybe three or four days or it could be another week. I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s something that could be a lot longer. But I can’t pinpoint what I’m going to be able to do and what they’re going to want me to do when I come back, too.”

Despite the fact Brodeur has missed time, his team has won four straight. Backup Johan Hedberg has stopped 81 of 85 shots while allowing just four goals in three games in Brodeur’s absence. As far as the even bigger picture, the Devils are on a 12-1-2 run and playing their best hockey of the season.

“I like the feeling I have playing lately,” Hedberg told The Bergen Record. “I talk about this all the time. It’s how I feel when I play and I think I’m thinking the right way and playing with the patience I want to. Sometimes (the puck) finds a way in anyway, but I like the poise I’ve had.”

Per ESPN:

The New Jersey Devils say goalie Martin Brodeur bruised his right elbow in the second period of a 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.X-rays were negative and Brodeur said he expects to play Friday night at home against the rival New York Rangers.

“It’s not pulled or torn,” Brodeur said. “I just banged it. From past experiences with bruises, usually it takes a couple of days to feel 100 percent.

“We’ll see how this one reacts.”

Brodeur said Patrick Kane‘s shot from a sharp angle caught him by surprise and struck him in the elbow.

“It was a shot from Kane in the corner,” Brodeur said. “I never saw it. The feeling was always there, I just lost strength.”

Brodeur removed the blocker, shook his arm and rotated his wrist as the trainer attended to him.

Play then resumed, but Brodeur skated off the ice 21 seconds later following a stoppage in play. He was replaced by Johan Hedberg.
